Hormones That Cause Tenderness Of The Breast

Breast Pain and Sensitivity

It's a coin toss. For some women too much or too little estrogen can cause breast tenderness and pain while others suffer from breast pain because of too little progesterone. Estrogen and progesterone are both female sex hormones that enter into flux when a woman is nearing menopause.

Puberty, Pregnancy, Breastfeeding

When a girl goes through puberty and experiences a rush of estrogen, she will have sore breasts. When a woman is pregnant, particularly during the first trimester, she will have sore breasts because of a surge of estrogen and, once again, when she initially starts breastfeeding her breasts are going to hurt because of estrogen.

Hormones in Flux

When a woman goes through menopause, estrogen and progesterone levels spike and dip drastically and this causes breast pain and tenderness.

HRT

Some women experience breast pain when they take hormone replacement therapy.

Breast Pain Can Peak at Menopause

Dr. Susan Lark, director of the PMS and Menopause Self-Help Center in Los Altos, California, and author of Premenstrual Syndrome Self-Help Book and Menopause Self-Help Book, notes that breast pain may be at its worst during the decade prior to menopause.

Oral Contraceptives

Oral contraceptives that contain estrogen and progesterone can result in breast pain. If there is too much estrogen or progesterone in the birth control pill it may be too strong for a particular woman, and she can react to the additives in the pill or to the synthetic compounds. This results in breast pain and sensitivity.
