Make And Print A Sign

Signs help your voice be heard.

Even in the digital age, the sign is a viable means of communication, and advances in software and printing techniques make creating and printing signs easy. Whether you're a small-business owner or a political activist, you want to be able to broadcast your message in clear and concise terms, and there's no better way to do that than with the bold, visual image a sign provides.

Instructions

Making/Printing a sign

1. Choose the appropriate software to design your template. For something involving solely black-and-white text, choose a program like Word. For something involving many types of text and images interacting, consider a more multifaceted software such as Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop allows you to manipulate images and text by layers, allowing for a greater degree of play and creativity within your design.

If you do not own Photoshop, you should consult a professional copyshop such as Kinkos, which typically has Photoshop or a similar program and will allow you to design and print your sign template from the store for an added fee.

2. Select the appropriate method of printing. For a small sign with black-and-white text, consider printing from home. If the sign features detailed graphics and colors, consider having it printed professionally. A pre-existing design can be on a disk or jump drive, or created in-house on the store's software. If the sign is large but features simple text and doesn't require sharp detail, you can print from home using a program such as Rasterbator, which prints large templates one sheet of paper at a time.

3. Consider the appropriate placement for your sign once it has been printed. If advertising, consider your appropriate market: signs for automotive businesses near freeways, food ads near cafeterias, etc. Also consider effectively use your design. Signs that are detailed should be close to eye level, while larger or simpler designs should be placed in a location where they can be seen by many people at once.
