Grants are available to help elementary math teachers improve their teaching
Continuing education is almost essential for teachers who want to be effective in the classroom. For mathematics teachers, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) offers a variety of grants and scholarships for current math teachers, including those at the elementary level. The NCTM would like to ensure that teachers can take courses and engage in professional development activities that will keep them up-to-date on trends in teaching and mold them into effective teachers.
Emerging Teacher-Leaders in Elementary School Mathematics Grants for Grades PreK--5 Teachers
Those who wish to become math teacher-leaders in their school may apply for a $6,000 grant. Applicants must have taught for at least three years and regularly teach math. They must also be a member of NCTM. Only one teacher from a school can receive the grant and can use the grant to pay for coursework related to mathematics education, conference registration fees, or materials to aid their mathematics instruction. School In-Service Training Grants
Elementary-school officals can apply to receive a grant of up to $4,000 to provide in-services in mathematics education to their teachers. The grant can be used to pay for conferences, coursework, speakers, consultants, and in-service materials. Included with the school's proposal should be a letter of support from the school's principal.
Teacher Professional Development Grants for Grades PreK--5 Teachers
PreK-5 teachers can apply for a $3,000 grant to improve their teaching through professional development. Applicants must be members of NCTM and submit a professional-development plan that explains how it will improve the teacher's performance in the classroom.
Mathematics Course Work Scholarships for Grades PreK-5 Teachers
Grants in the amount of $2,000 are available for current PreK-5 teachers to take mathematics content courses and/or mathematics education courses. Applicants must be a member of NCTM and have taught for at least three years. Applicants awarded grants will receive half of the money when they're originally awarded the grant and will receive the other half when they submit a final report of how they used the grant.
Program of Mathematics Study & Active Professionalism Grants for Grades PreK-6 Teachers
For teachers who have taught at least three years with a primary focus on mathematics, up to $24,000 is available to help them take coursework that will lead to an advanced degree. Teachers must be currently employed teaching math in grades PreK-6. Funds can be used for tuition and supplies related to the advanced coursework. Applicants must submit a proposal outlining their coursework and a timeline for completion. For each year of their proposal, recipients of the grant must submit short reports about how the funds were used.
