About Dolce And Gabbana Clothing

About Dolce and Gabbana Clothing

Dolce & Gabbana has become one of the most influential design houses in haute couture fashion since they opened in 1982. From meager beginnings, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana created a sexy, shapely line that quickly became one of the most cutting-edge collections in the world of fashion. Their designs soon became the favorites of curvaceous Hollywood celebrities because Dolce & Gabbana created one of the few lines that was not inspired by the waif models of the 1980s. In a few short years, the line grew enormously into a high-fashion powerhouse that is respected across the globe. Does this Spark an idea?

History

Dolce and Gabbana opened their first studio in Milan in 1982. Started by Domenico Dolce, a young fashion designer, and Stefano Gabbana, a Venice-born graphic designer, the duo was only 18 when they opened a design studio with only a $1,000 investment. Although they were criticized for branching out at such a young age, they received their first big break in 1985 when they were chosen as 1 of 3 designers featured in the "New Designers" category in the Milano Collezioni fashion event.

Clothing Lines

Starting with only a small women's line, Dolce & Gabbana was soon able to expand its collection in 1989. They now have a swimsuit line, lingerie, a men's collection, perfume, cologne, scarves and a designer jeans collection, marketed under the name, D&G Jeans. In 2000, they launched their White line, and subsequently, a line called "Black." Around the same time, Dolce & Gabbana released its collection of watches appropriately named "D&G Time."

Celebrity Clientele

Dolce & Gabbana can credit the company's huge success to 2 Hollywood celebrities--Isabella Rossellini and Madonna. Rossellini was quoted as saying, "They find their way out of any black dress, any buttoned-up blouse. The first piece of theirs I wore was a white shirt, very chaste, but cut to make my breasts look as if they were bursting out of it." In 1993, Madonna commissioned the designers to create costumes for her world tour "The Girlie Show." Other celebrity fans include Tom Cruise, Kylie Minogue and David Beckham.

The Company Today

Today, Dolce & Gabbana has flagship stores in New York, Las Vegas and Hong Kong. It is still a privately owned company. In addition to the privately commissioned lines and the retail locations, Dolce & Gabbana created a children's line in 2001.

Their advertisements have featured celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson, Matthew McConaughey and Claudia Schiffer.

In 2006, the company also opened a 1,500-square-foot restaurant in Milan called "Gold." The company has also published a book to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Awards

Some of the company's prestigious international awards include the "Woolmark Award," "Best Feminine Fragrance" and "Best Masculine Fragrance" by the Perfume Academy. Dolce & Gabbana was voted "Designer of the Year," by "FHM Magazine" for 2 years in a row and received the "Footwear Designer of the Year" award from "Footwear News." In 2003, they were voted "The Best Designer of the Year" by "GQ Magazine."
