Recruitment & Retention In Radiologic Technology

Consider education, experience and certification during an interview.

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, careers in radiology technology are reported to grow nearly 17 percent from 2008 to 2018. Growth is anticipated due to an aging population, resulting in a demand for diagnostic imaging.

Significance

According to the American Society of Radiology Technologists, the Human Resource Management Association reported nearly one in five employees in the health care industry quits her job each year. This increases costs associated with hiring a new employee and may also indicate employee dissatisfaction.

Recruitment Considerations

Offer competitive wages, benefits and sign-on bonuses. Sell your facility with longevity of employees, location and amenities like parking or flexible scheduling. Recruit at career fairs and high schools, educating people on the nature of work, potential earnings, advancement and scholarship opportunities.

Retention Considerations

Employers incur the cost of recruiting for a new employee, covering the position until it is filled and training a new radiology technologist. Consider retention bonuses instead of sign-on bonuses (i.e., a bonus after one, three or five years) and offer financial assistance for continuing education and licensing. Studies show that employees not only need fair compensation, but also an enjoyable place to work. Community activities, employee appreciation days and a team environment encourage employees to become involved.
