California Lvn Programs

California is home to a number of LVN programs.

A number of schools in California offer training programs in practical nursing, a field the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts will grow by 21 percent from 2008 through 2018. Carrying the approval of the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians, these schools include both public community colleges and private career schools. California's LVN programs prepare students for careers as licensed vocational nurses through a combination of classroom study and practice in laboratories and clinics.

Western Career College

Western Career College is a private, for-profit vocational and trade school with locations throughout California. The Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians has approved the school's practical nursing programs offered at its locations in Antioch, Sacramento, San Jose and San Leandro. Students take classes for approximately 12 months to earn the program's certificate and engage in practice in the college's on-site laboratory facilities. The college participates in veteran's benefits, state and federal grant programs and lending, such as traditional federal loans and Perkins loans designated exclusively for nursing students. Work study opportunities are also available for qualified students.

College of the Redwoods

College of the Redwoods is a public, two-year community college in the city of Eureka, a coastal city approximately 275 miles north of San Francisco. Before enrolling in the college's licensed vocational nursing programs, students must first gain certification as a nursing assistant in the state of California, which typically requires only one semester of study to complete. Qualified students have the option to pursue either a certificate of completion or an Associate of Science degree. The latter program requires students to complete 18 credits of general education requirements in sciences and humanities in addition to the professional courses in nutrition, pharmacology, psychology and adult and pediatric health. In addition to federal and state financial aid programs, the College of the Redwoods offers work study opportunities and a limited number of institutional scholarships. The school provides advising and personal counseling for all students as well as job placement assistance.
