Internists are doctors for adults.
To put it simply, internists are medical doctors. The spectrum of what internists do, and the areas they can specialize in, is so broad that it may be easier to first define them by what they don't do: internists do not treat children. Internists can be cardiologists, oncologists or gastroenterologists, but they are not family practitioners. Generally, internists receive the same basic medical training as all other doctors then concentrate on a specific area of adult medicine during their residencies.
University of Utah School of Medicine
The School of Medicine at the University of Utah has its own department of internal medicine, which offers several areas of specialty, including nephrology, oncology, rheumatology, endocrinology, gerontology and cardiology. The school has a large research department and a physician scientist training program which performs post-doctoral research along with clinical medicine. The school also offers fellowships in pulmonary disease, infectious disease, gastroenterology and cardiovascular disease. Internal medicine residencies are served at the Salt Lake City VA Medical Center, the LDS Hospital and the University Hospital.
