Medical sonographers use sound waves to diagnose patients for a number of ailments, to monitor pregnancies and determine the types of care needed for a range of other medical conditions. They operate a sonography machine and break down the results for doctors. Chicago offers several opportunities for sonographers. There are training facilities at which to earn your degree, and many great hospitals to work in.
Instructions
1. Apply to take a course at one of Chicago's leading sonography training centers. One of them, PCCTI, offers employment-based training that will prepare you for your job as a sonographer in 15 months. Another one to consider is Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center School of Diagnostic Sonography.
2. While you complete your training, make contact with one of the hospitals or doctor's offices in the Chicago area to ask about the possibility of a position after you graduate.
3. Pass your sonography exams and graduate.
4. Search for jobs as a sonographer on leading job boards, like Monster.com and Careerbuilder. Almost half of all sonographers work in a hospital environment; the other half work in doctor's offices and at other medical facilities.
5. Submit your resume and CV to the hospitals in the area. You may also consider applying for a job as an assistant sonographer at one of these hospitals, if you aren't hired in a full-time sonography position right away.
