Causes of Patchy Hair Loss
Bald patches may be alarming, and with good reason. A number of the disorders or infections that cause the hair loss can be quite severe. The condition may also be caused by medications. Patchy hair loss can be hidden with creative hairstyles, wigs and head wear, but the root cause has to be treated to stop the hair loss altogether.
Alopecia
Alopecia is a condition marked by balding and hair loss. Its causes can include hormonal disorders, menopause, a severe illness or emotional stress and a number of other diseases or vitamin deficiencies.
Lupus
Mostly affecting women, lupus is a disease of the autoimmune system. Patchy hair loss is accompanied by a number of other symptoms, such as fever, fatigue and a general malaise.
Syphilis
The sexually transmitted disease syphilis can also induce patchy hair loss. Open sores and ulcers in the genital area are symptoms that may accompany patchy hair loss.
Picardi-Lassueur-Little Syndrome
This disorder, which is very rare, not only causes patchy hair loss on the scalp but also in the eyebrow, armpit and genital area. The bare skin may scar after the hair falls out and hair follicles can erupt and harden.
Schäfer Syndrome
Schäfer syndrome causes patchy hair loss, along with a host of other symptoms. This disorder can lead to white patches in the mouth area, a thickening of the skin on the palms and soles of the feet, and abnormalities in the eyes, nails and hair. Mental retardation and stunted growth are other symptoms.
Medication
