Pink Eye Symptoms

Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, is a common eye ailment. Brought on by one of three factors (bacterial, viral or allergic), it is easily remedied but highly contagious. The symptoms are easily recognized and should not cause long-term problems for the sufferer.

Pink Color

Pink eye is caused by an infection of the conjunctiva, the mucous membrane that lines the surface of the eye. The lining of the conjunctiva is typically clear, but contains most of the blood vessels of the eye's surface. Any kind of infection that causes eye inflammation will result in the dilation of these blood vessels. The dilated blood vessels give the eye its pink appearance, which is especially noticeable when against the white backdrop of the sclera. The eye may also appear red.

Itching and Burning

Patients suffering from pink eye experience major eye irritation. Itching and burning are common symptoms that rubbing and scratching cannot alleviate. Some patients also experience the sensation of a foreign object being in their eye, although this is not the case.

Discharge

Many patients experience discharge when dealing with pink eye. Depending on the type of pink eye the patient has, the nature of the discharge differs. Pink eye caused by a bacterial infection produces a thicker, green- or yellow-colored discharge and typically affects both eyes. Pink eye caused by a viral infection results in a clear discharge and usually only affects one eye. Pink eye that is brought on by an allergic reaction causes more tearing than a discharge. The tearing usually affects the nose and both eyes.

Problems With the Eyelids

Often pink eye may also cause problems with the eyelids. The eyelids tend to stick together, and may be harder to open when the discharge dries and creates a crust around the eyes. The eyelids may also become red and swollen, which also makes them more difficult to open.

Photophobia

Many patients have a sensitivity to light known as photophobia when suffering from pink eye. The inflammation of the eye makes it particularly sensitive to normal, everyday stimuli.

Long-Term Effects

While pink eye is not a serious condition, if left untreated it can scar the surface of the eye. This may lead to permanent damage including loss of vision. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, it's always best to see your doctor. Treatment generally consists of eye drops.

Different Types

Different types of pink eye may have different or more severe symptoms. While the most common types of pink eye are caused by viral infections, bacterial infections or allergic reactions, pink eye can also be caused by sexually transmitted diseases. Pink eye is also more common in soft contact wearers, who commonly experience giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC). It is best to visit your eye doctor so he can diagnose your particular type of pink eye and get you the necessary treatment.
