About Radiology Technician Training In Maine

You can pursue radiology training in Maine.


Radiology technicians are allied health professionals who operate complex medical equipment that produce detailed images of the human body, such as X-rays, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Specialized training at the post-secondary level followed by a certification examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is required to seek employment as a radiology technician.


Accreditation


The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) accredits radiology technician training programs.


Programs


There are five accredited schools in Maine that provide training in radiologic technology: Eastern Maine Community College, Kennebec Valley Community College, Central Maine Medical Center’s School of Radiologic Technology, Mercy Hospital’s School of Radiologic Technology and Southern Maine Community College. Certificate, diploma and associate degree programs are available.


Duration


Training programs in Maine range from two to three years in duration.


Admission


Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent designation. High school or college-level coursework in math, biology, physics, chemistry and behavioral science is frequently required.


Curriculum


Curriculum typically includes general education and prerequisite coursework in the liberal arts and sciences alongside specialized instruction in radiographic procedures, patient care and protection, imaging analysis and clinical applications.


Prospects


According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor, employment of professionally trained radiology technicians will increase by at least 17 percent through to 2018. The average salary is $52,210 as of 2010.
