Credentialing specialists enroll providers with health plans and medical facilities nationwide, so a career as a credentialing specialist can be rewarding and challenging. These specialists maintain provider files and analyze contracts. Entry-level positions are available, but formal certification through the National Association of Medical Staff Services (NAMSS) is required to earn Certified Provider Credentialing Specialist (CPCS) credentials.
Instructions
1. Find employment in a physician office, clinic or medical facility. The NAMSS requires 12 consecutive months of experience in the medical field for certification.
2. Work as a credentialing specialist. The NAMSS requires credentialing experience for at least three of the past five years.
3. Register for the exam by mailing your application and payment to the NAMSS. Current CPCS exam fees are $300 for NAMSS members and $475 for non-members
4. Study and take a practice test. Practice tests and study guides are optional, but give you a good idea of what to expect on exam day.
5. Take the examination. There are 150 questions about the credentialing and privileging process. If you pass, you will be notified of your certification.
