Continuing education for physicians is often a requirement to keep their licenses.
Physicians understand the importance of staying abreast of the latest developments, procedures and practices in their specialized area or within the medical profession as a whole. In most states, doctors are required to participate in continuing education either as a condition of their license or as a prerequisite of the hospital where they work or have privileges, or perhaps as a requirement of their area of specialization. The American Medical Association's PMA Category 1 credit system is the continuing education standard in 40 states and two U.S. territories. The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education recognizes 2,500 continuing education providers for physicians.
Online Courses
Yale University, among many others, offers online continuing education courses for physicians.
Online continuing education courses for physicians are convenient, allowing the doctor to participate at home or in his office. Yale University offers continuing medication education online in three areas: 1) Yale grand rounds in which physicians recognized for their expertise in a specific areas lecture; 2) diabetes program where information from four diabetes conferences is gathered and discussed; and 3) courses mandated by the Connecticut legislature including sexual assault, risk management, infectious diseases and domestic violence. Physicians can acquire an annual subscription to Yale's online courses.

Conferences
Conferences are the most widely recognized form of physician continuing education.
Conferences are the most recognized forum for continuing medical education. Various medical groups, areas of specialization and other organized bodies offer conferences at which doctors can interact with colleagues and gain valuable insights into new procedures and practices. Sponsored conferences are sometimes controversial since the sponsoring body--a drug or medical equipment manufacturer or other medical vendor--is usually trying to bias physicians in favor of their products or services. However, there are many conferences that are unaligned to a commercial sponsor. For example, Medical Education Resources, a fully accredited, nonprofit medical education company, offers a wide range of conferences at such destinations as Las Vegas, Cape Cod, Mackinac Island, Michigan and other desirable locales.

Cruises to many ports of call feature physician continuing education conferences.
A popular continuing education venue for physicians is the cruise ship. Traveling by ship allows the doctor's family to accompany her for a vacation while she is attending classes. Continuing Education, Inc., a company out of St, Petersburg, Florida, offers continuing education cruises year-round to Alaska, the Mediterranean, Scandinavia and other ports of call. Various popular cruise lines host the programs and course costs, which are around $700, are in addition to the price of the cruise. The courses earn AMA Category 1 credits.
