Kidney transplants can be very expensive. In addition to the cost of the operation, you will have to take expensive antirejection drugs the rest of your life. A wide variety of private and government organizations provide grant money and other financial assistance to help pay for the cost of a transplant and related expenses.
Kidney and Urology Foundation Grants
The Kidney and Urology Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides grants and scholarships for kidney-transplant patients and their caregivers. They offer a $250 grant to caregivers, which can be used to help fund additional care. In addition, they offer several academic scholarship awards for transplant patients.
American Kidney Fund
The American Kidney Fund is a private foundation that provides grant money to help pay for the costs of post-transplant medication and other costs. Their Safety Net Grant also provides money that can be used to help kidney donors and transplant patients with medical and living expenses. To qualify for grant money, you will need to demonstrate financial need.
Other Foundations and Grants
There is a long list of other private foundations and organizations that provide assistance and grant money to kidney-transplant patients. For example, the American Organ Transplant Association helps pay airfare and other transportation costs for patients and donors. The National Kidney Foundation lists these organizations on their website.
Medicare and Medicaid
In most cases, you have to be 65 to qualify for Medicare insurance. However, the government makes an exception for kidney patients. If you are 65 or older and on Plan A, Medicare can pay 100 percent of your medical costs related to your transplant. If you are younger, Plan B covers 80 percent of your costs. If you can demonstrate significant financial need, Medicaid can be used to pay the additional 20 percent not covered by Medicare.
