Colleges In Southwestern Minnesota

Minnesota is a big state full of lakes, small towns, cold winters and hot summers. Minnesota is also filled with colleges and universities of all sorts, from large state schools to small liberal arts universities and various technical, trade and community colleges. The southwestern corner of Minnesota offers many educational opportunities, suiting those wanting study everything from car repair to scripture.


Southwest Minnesota State University


The town of Marshall is home to Southwest Minnesota State University, a public school of some 3,500 students. The school offers both undergraduate degrees in fields, such as accounting and physics and also has an MBA track, as well as Master's degree in science and education. One of the school's more unique features is its Senior College, which "provides lifelong learning opportunities for adults 50 years and older, who wish to explore new interests, continue learning and have fun," according to the school. Undergrad tuition for Minnesota residents is $3,621 a year, and students from North and South Dakota, Wisconsin and select midwestern states are offered reduced fees.

Minnesota West Community & Technical College- Canby Campus


Minnesota West Community & Technical College is a two-year school offering Associate's degrees, certificates and diplomas. Students at the Canby campus can choose from many different paths of study, such as a A.A.S in dental assisting, an electrician diploma or a management certificate. Credits from the courses can be transferred to four year universities, leading to a Bachelor's degree. Tuition at Minnesota West is $171.80 per credit, or $2,748 a semester for full time studies. The school does not charge out of state residents a higher tuition rate and offers free classes to those 66 and older on a space available basis, providing excellent learning opportunities for seniors.

Martin Luther College


Operated by the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, Martin Luther College is a small school of some 800 students in New Ulm. Martin Luther caters to students wanting to spend their lives in service of the church, existing to "train future pastors, teachers, and staff ministers for the public ministry." All students may study education and staff ministry, which prepares them for various positions in the church, such as administrator or youth coordinator. Male students may enter the pre-seminary studies program, which requires the study of Hebrew, Greek and other languages and prepares them to attend the Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. The school also offers Master's degrees in education and certificate programs. Tuition is $10,660 a year.
