IMRT is a certain type of radiology that requires specific certification.
To properly use intensity modulated radiation therapy, or IMRT, technologies, radiologists and radiologic technologists must have the proper certification. The Radiological Physics Center, or RPC, works with the National Cancer Institute to ensure that institutions practice proper IMRT procedures, according to the RPC website.
Radiographic Anatomy
Proper use of IMRT requires knowledge of radiographic anatomy. The practitioner must also be familiar with 3-D and 4-D representation technology, according to RPC. He must be able tell the difference between the target tumor and the surrounding organs at risk.
Patient Immobilization
The radiologist or radiologic technologist must be trained in up-to-date patient immobilization techniques. This ensures that the target of the IMRT is accurately applied while minimizing exposure to at-risk surrounding organs.
Dosage
When applying IMRT, technicians must be trained in the proper dosage for each situation. Proper dosage is based upon the distance between the target tumor and the at-risk surrounding organs. Among other factors, this distance will affect the number of available beam directions.
