Ideas For A Child Health Fair

A health fair can teach about the dangers of smoking.

If you are planning a school or community-sponsored child health fair, there are several ideas you can employ to make your event a success. Tailor your ideas for the child health fair to fit the age groups of the intended audience, so that the information being presented and the manner in which it is presented will be appropriate for each group.

Present a Film on a Health-related Subject

Consider a student-made film with young people talking about the importance of avoiding certain destructive behaviors such as smoking or drug use. Or you may wish to focus on following a certain regimen that promotes good health, such as practicing good hygiene, eating right and including a certain amount of exercise each day. Creating a film of this nature doesn't have to be difficult or expensive. In fact, you can use a consumer-level camera and a free or low-cost film editing program to create your film.

Health Care Speakers

Another idea for your health fair for children is to enlist speakers to give presentations. Nurses, doctors, nutritionists and sports figures (including coaches) are all great people to approach to speak at your health care fair. You may also want to enlist people in fields that are related to the topic of the presentation. For example, you may want to have someone from the entertainment industry or even a model talk to teens about having a healthy body image and the importance of eating well and exercising to live a happy, productive life. It is also often a good idea to include a question and answer section after the speakers have finished.

Friendly Characters

To reach young children with your message, you may also want to have someone dress up in a costume, such as a friendly animal or cartoon character, to help present ideas at you health fair. Including these types of characters (especially for a younger audience) works to keep the topics interesting and even entertaining for kids. After presentations are over, these characters could pass out items to children related to the topic of the presentations. For example, if a presenter spoke on the importance of good dental care, the character could pass out toothbrushes and floss along with a piece of sugar-free candy or gum.
