Get The Most From A Physical Exam

Get the Most From a Physical Exam

Most people aren't too thrilled at the prospect of going to the doctor. It usually doesn't matter who your doctor is, but trips to your physician make many people a bit uneasy. You can get what you need out of your visit and it doesn't have to be painful. Read on to learn get the most from a physical exam.

Instructions

1. Speak up and ask questions during your appointment. Your physician isn't a mind reader and if you have concerns, you should express them. Some people get nervous asking their doctor so many questions, but doctors are there for suppport.

2. Be honest. It is one of the top recommendations doctors have for patients. If you have a good physician, they won't make you feel judged about your health history--regardless of how you feel about it. In order for you to get the best health care, most doctors say the key is to be open and honest about your health. It is only then that they can make recommendations best for you and your future.

3. Write everything down, whether it is questions you have or any medical options you would like to discuss with your doctor. Some people feel quite nervous or uneasy about their visit no matter what and that can make it easy to forget the important things you should discuss. With the short amount of time you have, bringing a list can eliminate the stress of having to remember all the important stuff.

4. Ask more questions, even after your visit. Many of us get home and remember that one nagging question that we were supposed to ask or didn't write down. Don't be afraid to call the doctor's office. And if you can't get in touch with your physician directly, you can also speak with their nurse practitioner or leave a message with the nurse.

5. Follow your instincts by recognizing whether or not your doctor puts you at ease. It is very tough to get the best health care if every visit to your physician puts you into a stressful state. If you have tried getting the most out of your doctor and don't seem to get the answers or help you are looking for, search for a new physician. Ask friends for a referral or talk to co-workers about their doctors. You may be much happier with a different one who can give you a completely new experience at the doctor's office.
