Early Treatment Of Fibromyalgia

Early detection can be extremely important in treating Fibromyalgia effectively. According to a study conducted by the Swedish medical university, Karolinska Institute, drugs that affect the Central Nervous System work more effectively on patients who are treated early in the syndrome's development. Fibromyalgia can be treated naturally, or with medication. Usually, a combination of the two is most effective.

Who Is Affected?

Fibromyalgia is estimated to affect 5 million adult Americans, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. Of that 5 million, 80 to 90 percent of those diagnosed are women. While the condition can manifest in young adults, it is most commonly diagnosed in the middle aged.

Causes

While the exact cause of Fibromyalgia is unknown, it typically manifests itself after an illness, accident or traumatic event. The condition may also be genetic: women are more likely to develop Fibromyalgia if a blood relative has the condition as well, according to NIAMS.

Natural Treatment

Lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet, good sleeping habits, and stress reduction can all help to improve the symptoms of Fibromyalgia in its early stages. Exercise is also an effective way to combat the syndrome. According to a study conducted by Daniel S. Rooks, Ph.D., of Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, regular exercise and strength training helped to relieve symptoms such as pain, fatigue and stiffness in a number of Fibromyalgia sufferers. Sustained physical activity at least for 30 minutes a day is preferred.

Medications

SSNRIs, muscle relaxants, anti-convulsants and pain medications are all prescribed for the treatment of Fibromyalgia. Anti-inflammatory drugs, however, are not effective in treating Fibromyalgia, as the pain is not caused by inflammation.

Alternative Treatments

Holistic treatments for Fibromyalgia may include nutritional therapy, acupuncture, massage, chiropractic care, biofeedback and meditation.
