When Is It Important To Have A Gynecologist

A gynecologist is a health care practitioner who specializes in reproductive health. Regular gynecologic exams are important for the early detection of infections and diseases in women. When and how often you should see your OB/GYN ultimately depends on your age and several other factors.

Expert Insight

It is important to have a gynecologist see you upon noticing changes in your period, or in the presence of any pain or discomfort, regardless of if you are sexually active or not, explains Dr. Edwin Huang, a gynecologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Time Frame

The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends that young women or adolescents start seeing a gynecologist between the ages of 13 and 15, or upon becoming sexually active, whichever comes first.

Benefits

It is a good idea to continue seeing your gynecologist once a year. Annual pap smears help detect early precancerous changes on the cervix, explains Dr. Johnathan Lancaster, director of women's oncology at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute.

Special Circumstances

You should see your OB/GYN if you are planning to become pregnant or upon becoming pregnant. A visit is also warranted when you are nearing menopause and notice changes.
