Job Skills For A Ct Scan Worker

CAT scans use X-rays to create images can help detect broken bones, head injuries or conditions afflicting other internal organs.

CT scan technicians create interior images of the patient's body for doctors to use when diagnosing conditions or injuries. CT scan technicians' other job duties include performing other radiological procedures that help doctors see the inside of the patient's body. Education, certification and licensing are required in most states before a person can work as a CT scan technician.

Computer Skills

CT scan technicians must be knowledgeable about working with computers. CT scanners are also known as computerized tomography scanners, and a computer imager is needed to produce the images after the scan. A CT scan technician is expected to prepare and operate the computer and its software for each patient.

Medical Skills

An important component of a CT scan technician's job is patient care. A CT scan technician must be able to guide the patient through the process of getting a CT scan and help them move to the appropriate positions to get the necessary images. A CT scan technician may also need to be able to administer other tests for patients, and have basic medical training, in case of an emergency.

Radiology Expertise

Before performing CT scans, a technician must be trained thoroughly in radiology and the risks associated with it. A CT scan technician must be able to administer contrast materials to a patient to create clear images of patients' internal organs. Also, a CT scan technician should be in good health, because there are risks associated with the radiation emitted by CT scanners. Injuries or death can result, if safety protocols are not followed.

Education

Education for a CT scan technician can be completed during a two- or four-year program, depending on the school you attend. After completing the program, a certification exam must be taken and many states also require an additional license. CT scan technicians are also often expected to continue taking educational courses to maintain their licensing and certification.
