Lugol's iodine was created in 1829 by a French doctor named J.G.A. Lugol. It is a mixture of 5% iodine, 10% potassium iodide and distilled water. Getting enough iodine in the diet is important because it works on the hormones in a person's thyroid gland. Not having enough iodine in the diet can create health problems associated with the thyroid gland, such as a goiter, a swelling of the thyroid gland that causes a noticeable lump on the neck.
Water Purification
Lugol's iodine is sometimes used in emergencies to purify drinking water. The measurement is three drops of Lugol's iodine per liter of water. Iodine kills bacteria, viruses and cysts, but it's important to keep in mind that because Lugol's iodine isn't pure iodine but is diluted with distilled water and potassium iodide, the purification process may take longer.
Salmonella Poisoning
Those who suspect the bloating and gas they are experiencing are from salmonella poisoning can put six drops of Lugol's iodine solution in a half glass of water. Stir the solution thoroughly and then drink it. A person can take this treatment four times daily, at bedtime and after meals, for three days. Discomfort should be reduced within an hour of the first dose.
Considerations
Those who are allergic to iodine should never take Lugol's iodine. Symptoms of an allergic reaction to iodine can include a rash, swelling of the throat and fever.
Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding may require higher amounts of iodine, but they should check with their doctors before implementing any oral or topic use of iodine, as there is some concern that topical amounts could be absorbed by the skin and wind up in breast milk.
Iodine will react with certain drugs and herbs, which is another reason to consult a physician before beginning any kind of treatment with Lugol's iodine, or iodine in general.
Finally, Lugol's iodine should not be taken by people with pulmonary edema, bronchitis or known tuberculosis unless under the advice of a physician.
While Lugol's iodine was made available over the counter in 2007, the FDA is considering restricting its availability because it can also be used to make methamphetamines.
