Magnetic resonance imaging is a type of radiologic science that combines art and science to produce images of inside the human body. Doctors and physicians use these images to diagnose various types of illnesses and ailments. Radiography or radiologic science educates students in human biology, patient care and pathology. Prospective MRI technicians need to have strong communication skills and the ability to follow physician orders. Careers for MRI technicians are available in hospitals, clinics and imaging centers.
Richland Community College
The associate's degree in radiography at Richland Community College prepares students for careers as MRI technicians. The curriculum includes courses in radiographic patient care, radiation physics, imaging equipment, radiographic procedures, principles of radiography and radiation protection. Students are also required to participate in a clinical experience at a local hospital or medical center. The Joint Review Commission on Education in Radiologic Technology accredits the associate's degree program in radiologic technology at Danville Area Community College. In addition to classroom and laboratory courses, students must complete 1,300 hours of clinical education. Clinical education offers students an opportunity to learn under an experienced technician. Students learn use radiologic equipment and perform radiologic procedures. The curriculum includes courses in anatomy and physiology, x-ray systems operations, radiation biophysics, pharmacology, image analysis and patient care. Graduates are prepared for licensing and certification examinations.

The two-year, radiography associate's degree at Heartland Community College prepares students for entry-level careers as MRI technicians. Students learn to operate radiographic equipment, perform procedures, position patients and protect against radiation.
