Criminal Forensics Schools

A degree in criminal forensics can advance a career in justice.


A degree in criminal forensics can lead to a variety of career opportunities. Whether you wish to pursue a career as a medical examiner, a crime scene examiner, a psychological profiler or a crime lab analyst, a degree in forensics is the first step. Several colleges offer degree programs in criminal forensics. Though requirements will vary job to job, most require a hands-on internship with a law enforcement or justice agency.


Florida Gulf Coast University


Florida Gulf Coast University offers a Master of Science in criminal forensic studies. Students can choose from two research areas: the forensics behavioral analyst concentration and the death investigator concentration. The program requires 42 credit-hours for completion. Courses include advanced quantitative research methods, human osteology, criminal evidence and courtroom testimony, and cultural ecology. Students complete a one-semester internship at a criminal justice agency or a research internship with a Florida Gulf Coast University professor.

California State University Stanislaus


California State University at Stanislaus offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice with a forensic science concentration option. The degree requires completion of 113 credits. Required coursework includes causes of crime, juvenile justice and criminal procedures. Required coursework for the forensics concentration includes DNA technology, criminalistics and forensic chemistry. Students must complete a three-credit internship in their junior or senior year.

Seattle University


Seattle University offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree programs in criminal justice with specializations in forensic psychology or forensic science. Bachelor’s degrees require at least 180 credit hours to complete. Forensic science coursework includes criminal law, theories of investigation and victimology. Forensic psychology degrees require coursework in abnormal psychology, and criminal profiling and the psychopath. Seattle University partners with several local law enforcement agencies to provide internship opportunities, including the Seattle Police Department and the King County Prosecutor’s Office.

John Jay College of Criminal Justice


The John Jay College of Criminal Justice offers a doctorate degree in criminal justice with a concentration in forensic science and policy. The Ph.D. prepares students for careers in research and instruction. Forensics coursework includes classes in criminalistics, spectroscopy, toxicology, serology and genetic-marker identification. Most science classes in the forensics program are taught by professors specializing in biochemistry, chemistry and biology. Doctorate degrees require 60 credits and a dissertation.
