How Does a Picture Framer Spend a Workday?
Organization
The owner of a small picture framing business first checks what orders are due to be out that day. These are all kept in a log for efficiency. Preparing finished frames for pick up and calling customers whose orders are ready is a daily task, along with meeting with new customers. Being organized is key for keeping any size frame shop in business. All supply orders are called in for the next week or so and then, like a short order cook, a framer starts with the next order and starts producing. Sample frames and store displays must also be kept up constantly.
Supplies and Ordering
Glass and hardware, such as picture wire, eyehooks and brad nails, are usually kept in stock so those are ordered less frequently. Supplies that may need to be ordered weekly are mat board, chop or precut molding, or foam board backing. In a small frame shop, keeping these in constant supply is a challenge due to space and cost. Using specialty mats or frames can add revenue to the business, but these supplies must be used efficiently.
Production
Picture framers may frame a variety of things, including photographs, prints, posters or specialty orders with three-dimensional objects. When working on a standard one-mat, no frills project, a framer goes through about a seven-step process, beginning with cutting the matt to size. If not already specified by the customer, a framer may choose a mat color and style frame as well. Framers use a mat cutter to aid in the precision of multiple cuts day after day. A glasscutter is also a daily tool for the framer. This allows the glass to be cut safely to the exact size for the frame. Some small frame shops cut glass by hand, though this is more dangerous. It's also important to safely hold molding in place for joining. Molding can be hand-nailed and glued at the corner angles, but some framers have pneumatic molding joiners which speed up production. Frames must be finished by fitting all pieces together cleanly and accurately. Protective paper is sealed to the back of the molding, and hanging hardware is attached. The framer's signature seal can then be placed as a finishing touch on the back of the paper.
