Professional photography is a mixture of technical skill and creative ability. An education in photography can provide students with the skills needed to think imaginatively, solve visual problems and adapt to challenging situations. There are a number of two-year photography schools that will allow students to develop these skills.
New England School of Photography
New England School of Photography in Boston has been in operation since 1968 and serves about 150 full-time students. Learning involves lecture, active laboratory time and hands-on instruction. Students will learn digital imaging techniques, integrating film and analog photographic techniques.
The first year of study involves mastering basic technical skills and principles of color, and black and white photography. In the second year, students will choose courses in areas of specialization. Majors and minors include such courses as advertising and commercial photography, visual journalism and creative imaging arts.
Colorado Mountain College
The Roaring Fork campus of Colorado Mountain College is located in Spring Valley, Colorado, and is surrounded by the picturesque scenery of the Rocky Mountains. The college offers an Associate of Applied Science in professional photography. This program involves hands-on experience in basic and advanced techniques for black and white and color photography, digital imaging, processing and printing, and the latest software. There is a focus on digital capture, but film-based capture is also covered. Students receive foundation training in such areas as lenses and aesthetics. They can then continue their education in the studio.
Kaplan College
Formerly the Ohio Institute of Photography and Technology, Kaplan College offers students an Associate of Applied Science in photographic technology. Students at the Dayton, Ohio, campus can study one specific field of photography or choose to diversify with the general applied photography program.
Commercial photography teaches students camera and lighting techniques for studio and on-location photography with small, medium and large format cameras. Students specializing in portrait photography will learn camera operation, processing and finishing in addition to merchandising and business practices.
General applied photography involves training in the fundamentals, such as camera skills, lighting, photo design and computer software. This program also includes general training in portrait and commercial photography.
Randolph Community College
Randolph Community College in Asheboro, North Carolina, has a student population of almost 150 students and has been open for more than 40 years. Students interested in photography can obtain an associate degree in photographic technology over six semesters.
The first year of study focuses on the foundation of photography, including darkroom techniques. In the second year of study, students can choose an area of concentration, including bio-communications, commercial photography, photojournalism and portrait studio management. Students have an opportunity to include an on-the-job internship with their studies.
