Shortness of breath can be caused by a number of illnesses or factors. The reasons for shortness of breath indicate the type of emergency treatment necessary. Emergency treatment for shortness of breath depends on the symptoms that accompany the problem, and individuals should be aware of what else is going on in their body if they feel short of breath.
Shortness of Breath with Chest Pain
According to Family Doctor, shortness of breath with pain in the chest or a feeling of tightening in the chest could be an indicator of a heart attack. According to the Mayo Clinic, individuals experiencing heart attack symptoms will most likely be treated with aspirin, blood thinners, nitroglycerin or thrombolytics initially in an emergency situation. Immediate surgery may also be required.
Shortness of Breath with Wheezing
Shortness of breath with wheezing in asthmatics is a sign of an attack. Emergency treatment for an asthma attack involves using a rescue inhaler or bronchodilator. Severe cases may require emergency treatment with cortisteroids. In the worst cases, forced oxygen therapy, intubation or mechanical ventilation may be required.
Shortness of Breath and Swelling
Individuals who experience shortness of breath along with swelling in the legs and feet may be suffering from congestive heart failure. Emergency treatment for congestive heart failure may include the introduction of a diuretic to help remove excess fluid. Other medications to help the heart function more efficiently may also be given. In severe cases, a pace maker or heart pump may need to be installed, but these are temporary fixes. Eventually, the patient may need a heart transplant.
Shortness of Breath and Multiple Symptoms
Individuals experiencing shortness of breath with a fever and chills along with chest pains and a pussy discharge may have a lung abscess. This will need to be treated with an antibiotic immediately.
Shortness of Breath, Fever and Blood
Individuals suffering from shortness of breath who also have a fever and bloody mucous may be suffering from an infection or a blood clot in the lungs. In the case of infection, an antibiotic will need to be administered. In the case of blood clots, an individual will need to be given strong blood thinners immediately. If the clot is large or does not dissolve, it will need to be removed.
