Ultrasonography is a diagnostic medical sonography function that is implemented to capture internal images of the patient's body. This operation can be learned at professional medical schools, universities, colleges and hospitals through certificate, diploma and degree programs. Once qualified, the person uses sonography equipment for diagnosis of various medical conditions. To gain entry into any of these courses, the student must possess a science or healthcare background. The courses range from 1 to 4 years and teach various aspects including operation and maintenance of machines. As of November 2010, salaries for qualified personnel range from $40,000 to $70,000 depending upon qualification, position and experience.

The ultrasound department performs over 40,000 exams per year ensuring all students are given actual clinical exposure. All students are given direct hands-on training under the instructions of experienced registered sonographers and certified physicians. Admission requirements include a high-school diploma and 2-year AMA health training program that is patient-care related. Alternatively, students can also embark the course if they have successfully completed their Bachelor's degree in the United States or Canada with general pre-requisites that include Physics, Biological Science, Algebra Communications, Human Anatomy, Medical Terminology and Patient Care.
Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland
John Hopkins University was founded in 1876 and has made it its place in the top universities of the country. The School of Medical Imaging conducts a 14-month Diagnostic Medical Sonography Certificate Program. The program aims to make the student understand gynecologic, pediatric, abdominal and high-risk obstetrics ultrasonography. After completing the certification, students are eligible to apply for professional certification through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
New York University
The New York University offers students an A.A.S. in Diagnostic Medical Sonography that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to sit for the American Registry in Diagnostic Medical Sonography examination in abdominal sonography, adult echocardiography, OB/GYN sonography and instrumentation examinations.
