Double Mastectomy Surgery Recovery

Double Mastectomy Surgery Recovery

Double mastectomy is a major operation done to prevent or treat the emergence of breast cancer. Often coupled with breast reconstruction, the recovery time can last several weeks.

What is Double Mastectomy?

Mastectomy is an operation in which all the tissue in a breast is removed in order to prevent or treat breast cancer. Double mastectomy is the removal of breast tissue in both breasts.

Recovery Time

A mastectomy patient will typically be released from the hospital after a few days. Following that, it will take several weeks to fully recover and for the swelling to completely disperse. Physical therapy should also be a part of the recovery in order to regain range of motion.

Breast Reconstruction

Many patients undergoing mastectomy will have breast reconstruction. Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure in which a breast implant, or a patient's natural skin, fat and muscle, is used to recreate a breast mound that resembles a natural breast.

Recovery Time

Breast reconstruction can be done at the same time as the mastectomy or at a later time. For patients undergoing breast reconstruction, you may feel tired and sore for one or two weeks. It may take several weeks to recover and patients should avoid strenuous activity for three to six weeks. However, a delayed reconstruction is usually quicker recovery, as the mastectomy wound has already healed.

Considerations

While recovering, it is important to follow a balanced diet and get plenty of rest. Do not smoke or drink alcohol, and start walking as soon as possible to prevent blood clots and reduce swelling.
