Teaching Resources For Secondary Schools

For those who teach for secondary institutions there are a myriad of resources available in both your community and by reaching out to other teachers across the world through the Internet. Take advantage of these opportunities in order to learn to teach more effectively, engaging your students in the material you have selected.

Internet

The Internet is chock-full of resources for secondary school teachers. Most government organizations and non-profit organizations will have a section for teachers, specifically tailored to specific grade levels, on their websites. Websites also exist specifically for teachers that allow them to post on forums, share information or download teaching materials and handouts.

Museums

Most cities, and some smaller towns, will have education departments. While many of these resources exist to enrich experiences of students who have come to the museum to visit, some will have information and resources available to teachers who are not visiting with their classes. Contact a museum in your area or one that specializes in what your class is studying. If they do not have information at hand, they will likely be able to point you toward someone who does.

Theater Companies

Not every teacher thinks about theater when looking for school resources. However, many professional theater companies in big cities, and sometimes even larger towns, will have classes available to your students. In addition, many allow your school or class to hire a teaching artist to come and teach about theater or teach other subjects through theater. Many companies also develop curriculum guides that make it easier for teachers to lead classroom discussions and pull references for the class in conjunction with a theater presentation.

Other Teachers

When working in a secondary school, don't neglect the resources and knowledge of your fellow educators. If you are the only teacher for a certain subject in your school, call up other area schools and schedule a meeting with other teachers of your subject to bounce ideas and resources off one another. You can even call up your local university and speak to someone in the department of the subject you work with and speak to her about possible resources for your students and classroom.
