Early Breast Cancer Symptoms

Because the early onset of breast cancer often doesn't display symptoms or cause pain, it's important for women aged 40 and older to get a mammogram every 1 to 2 years, according to the National Cancer Institute. Besides doing a monthly breast exam, women who have a history of breast cancer in their family should be especially vigilant about possible symptoms.

Underarm Lump

Swollen lymph nodes under the arm can appear as a lump in the armpit.

Breast Lump

A lump in any area of the breast, no matter how small, can be a sign of cancer.

Sensitivity

Although breast tenderness is a normal symptom when menstruating, if it occurs at any other time of the month, it should be checked out promptly.

Discharge

The nipple may discharge a fluid that is either bloody, clear, or an unusual color.

Skin

The skin's appearance can take on a marbled texture, become scaly or develop a red, pitted look.

Shape

Any change in the shape of the breast, like flattening, swelling or dimpling is a symptom.

Nipple Deformity

Nipples that become dimpled or inverted are warning signs of early breast cancer.
