What To Expect During A Basic Eye Exam

A basic eye exam is meant not only to prescribe needed vision correction, but also to examine the health of your eyes. The exam is generally pain free and takes less than an hour to complete.

Types

The type of eye exam will depend on the eye specialist. An ophthalmologist (an eye doctor who specializes in eye care and diseases) may perform specific tests, if any type of surgery or medical treatment is indicated.

Function

An optometrist is the doctor most often visited for basic eye exams. According to the Mayo Clinic, an optometrist evaluates your vision and prescribes corrective lenses. He may also diagnose common eye diseases and prescribe medication.

History

When you have a basic eye exam, an assistant such as the ophthalmic technician or nurse will take a complete medical history. It is important to list all medical issues and medications. You will also be requested to give a history of any eye disease or problems you may have.

Tests

You will be given a glaucoma screening test and asked to read a vision chart to check visual acuity with and without your current eyewear. According to opt.indiana.edu, color vision testing is recommended as part of a basic eye exam, especially for males.

More Tests

Expect a slit-lamp exam where a bright light illuminates the front of your eye so the doctor can see it under microscopic examination. You may be given special eye drops to reveal any damage to the cornea. Other tests may include visual field screening to check for any blind spots or peripheral vision loss.

Frequency

According to the Mayo Clinic, factors that affect the frequency for a basic eye exam include age, general health and a history or risk of developing eye problems.
