Get Insurance With A Preexisting Condition

You can get insurance if you have a preexisting condition.

People with preexisting conditions have long been ignored and denied by health insurance companies. If you applied for health insurance coverage before 2010 and you have a preexisting medical condition, you may have been denied coverage. However, in March 2010, the new preexisting condition insurance plan, or PCIP, went into effect. This plan is under the Affordable Care Act, passed by the 2010 Congress and President Obama. Keep in mind that this program varies by state.

Instructions

1. Visit HealthCare.gov to learn about the preexisting condition insurance plan in your state. With the Affordable Care Act, you can no longer be denied coverage because you have a preexisting condition.

2. Click on "About the Law" and then "Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan." From this page, you'll see a map of the United States. Click on your state.

3. Read through the information about your state's PCIP program. You'll find details about the plan and a list of conditions you need to meet to qualify, such as being uninsured for at least six months and having trouble getting insured because of your preexisting condition. If you meet the requirements of your state, you can apply for coverage through the PCIP program.

4. Notice that some of the state's PCIP programs are run federally and some are operated by state. If your state runs its own program, follow the instructions on the state's page to apply for insurance coverage. If your state's program is federally run, you can apply by filling out an application on HealthCare.gov. A link to the application can be found in the resource section below.

5. Fill out the application and sign it. You'll also need to provide a letter from an insurance company from the past six months denying you coverage or benefits because of your preexisting condition. Mail the form and letter to the National Finance center, Attn: Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan. The address is P.O. Box 60017, New Orleans, LA, 70160.
