EKG technician training is offered at various schools throughout Southern California.
An electrocardiogram, or EKG, is a test that monitors the heart's electrical impulses. EKG technicians are health care professionals who work in doctor's offices, hospitals and other facilities setting up and monitoring EKG equipment. There are various schools spread throughout Southern California that offer training in become a certified EKG technician.
Cal State L.A.
California State University, Los Angeles offers a 50-hour EKG technician certification program that's offered through the university's Division of Extended Education. The course meets twice a week on campus for three-and-a-half hours per session. During the course, students learn the role of an EKG technician, prepare a patient for an EKG, medical terminology, the human body's cardiac cycle, and the care and safety of patients.
Cal School of Health Sciences
The California School of Health Sciences, which is based in the Orange County city of Garden Grove and has two Los Angeles satellite campuses, offers a four-day certification course for potential EKG monitor technicians. The class focuses on the information needed to detect heart arrhythmias. Students learn how pacemakers work, the parts of the cardiac conduction system and their proper function, and drugs used to treat heart arrhythmia.
UEI College
United Education Institute, commonly known as UEI College, is a nationwide technical institute that has a Fresno campus about two hours north of Los Angeles. It offers a cardiovascular/EKG technician program. The course teaches technical and administrative skills, including administering EKGs, performing stress tests, maintaining test equipment, and assisting doctors in diagnosis and treatment. The college also offers job placement assistance for graduates.
Grossmont College
Grossmont College, located in the city of El Cajon, which borders San Diego to the east, has a two-semester telemetry technician/EKG technician program that's taught evenings at the college during the fall and spring semesters. Enrollment is offered once a year for classes that begin each August. Enrollees must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma, GED or equivalent.
