Government Recreation Grants

Government grants help states and local communities expand or develop recreational facilities.

If a community wants to expand the amount of recreational facilities available to its citizens, the federal government has a number of programs to assist with this. Federal agencies like the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Housing and Urban Development administer the grants. However, these grants are open only to state and local governments, and grant amounts will vary based on need.

Community Development Block Grants

The purpose of the Community Development Block Grant is to improve neighborhoods, promote economic development and create or improve community facilities--including recreational facilities--and other services. These funds can be used to obtain property for public use, construct or demolish buildings and offer or improve public facilities. This grant is open to cities located within large metropolitan areas, cities with more than 50,000 residents and urban counties with 200,000 or more residents. Grants are accepted from November through August, and approval times can take between 60 and 90 days. Grant amounts range from around $70,000 to the extreme high $180,000,000, but most grants will be a lot less than the topmost amount.

Community Facilities Loans and Grants

The Department of Agriculture's Rural Development division administers the Community Facilities Loans and Grants program. The funds from this grant can be used to create, expand or improve community facilities and services. This grant is given to local and state governments, tribal governments and non-profits, and the funds from these grants must benefit rural residents. Grant funds must be used for a specific project, and grant amounts will vary based on project needs. Generally, however, grant amounts range from $500 to $175,000, with most grants being less than the topmost amount.

Outdoor Recreation-Acquisition, Development and Planning

The Department of the Interior administers this grant, which seeks to help states prepare Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plans. The grant also provides states with funds to obtain and develop outdoor recreation lands and facilities that will benefit the local community. Only states and state agencies are eligible to apply for this grant, and states must match the grant amount by 50 percent. Grant monies expire within three years of being awarded, and grant amounts range from $150 to over $5,000,000.
