Florida Radiologic Technologist License Laws

In Florida, a radiologic technology license is necessary to operate any type of X-ray equipment. The Florida Department of Health handles the licensing of professionals in the field and offer six types of licenses: basic X-ray, basic X-ray for podiatry, radiography, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, and radiologist assisting, each of which has its own specific requirements.

Basic X-Ray

The basic X-ray and basic X-ray podiatric licensing have identical requirements, but the podiatric license only allows candidates to perform X-rays on the feet. For both credentials, candidates must attend a basic training course in X-ray safety or complete a self-study course known as "Radiography Essentials for Limited Practice." Upon completion of the training, candidates must take and pass the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists' test for limited scope of practice in radiography, which is taken using a computer at Pearson Vue testing centers across Florida. The exam features 100 multiple-choice questions and lasts for one hour and 40 minutes.

Radiography, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy

For the radiography, nuclear medicine or radiation therapy licenses in Florida, candidates must complete a minimum of a two-year degree program that has approval from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. As of February 2011, Florida served as home to 14 radiography programs, five radiation therapy programs, and 13 nuclear medicine programs. Candidates must then pass the registry's certification test in their respective fields. All three exams are multiple choice and feature 200 questions. Lasting a total of up to four hours, the exams are taken using a computer at Pearson Vue testing centers.

Radiologist Assistant

To become a radiologist assistant in Florida, candidates must first gain a radiography license and work for at least one year as a radiographer. Candidates must also have a minimum of a four-year bachelor's degree in radiography. After completing the necessary educational and work experience, prospective radiologist assistants in Florida must pass the certification test of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. This test consists of 200 multiple-choice questions and 20 to 30 case history questions. Taken using a computer, the exam lasts up to seven hours.

Reciprocity

Candidates who already hold a license in a field related to radiologic technology from another state can receive a license in Florida with no further testing or training. Additionally, candidates who have certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board also qualify for a Florida license with no additional testing or training. To begin the process, candidates must complete a form available from the Florida Department of Health's website and send proof of their licenses or certifications to the department.
