Get An American History Fellowship

There are hundreds of fellowships for people who love American history; these monetary awards can help you to study at a graduate level, teach or do research. Follow these steps if you would like to get an American history fellowship.

1. Get a bachelor's degree in history. Learn all you can about American history.


2. Go to the American Historical Association website. They list awards and fellowships in many different historical topics. There are awards for students, professors and historians.


3. Visit the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History website and search for scholarly fellowships. This group sponsors Lincoln and Frederick Douglass Prizes for outstanding books in American history, as well as research fellowships for scholars, doctoral candidates and journalists. The Gilder Lehrman History Scholars Program is a competitive summer scholarship program that allows high school sophomores and juniors to come to New York City to study American history.


4. Ask the chair of your history department about fellowships if you are a student. Many universities offer graduate fellowship opportunities for students who are accepted into doctoral programs.


5. Fill out your applications thoroughly and on time. Whether you are a student or a professor, it is important to plan ahead for a fellowship so that you meet all of the deadlines.
