Mri Tech Vs Ultrasound Tech

There are several similarities and differences between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound technicians. Both types of technicians carry out similar duties in order to help doctors diagnose patients. However, the training and professional requirements each of these technicians must have are different due to the type of medical equipment they use to obtain diagnostic images of patients.

The Facts

Both MRI and ultrasound technicians are considered radiologic technologists. MRI is often used by doctors to detect diseases in the brain, spine and bones. This form of radiology technology produces images through a computer using a magnetic field and radio waves.

Also known as sonogram technicians, ultrasound techs use devices called transducers that send sound waves through their patients' bodies in order to produce images of their organs. This form of diagnostic imaging is used to identify conditions in the nervous and digestive system. Sonograms are also widely used by obstetricians to check the status of unborn fetuses.

Function

Ultrasound and MRI technicians both work under the direction of physicians or department managers. Their duties include maintaining equipment, explaining diagnostic procedures to patients and moving or assisting patients to the right position in order to obtain clear images.

MRI and sonogram technology are among the safest types of radiology technology. However, MRI technicians have the additional responsibility of protecting their patients from the magnetic field created by MRI scanners. They ensure that patients have removed all of their jewelry before the procedure and check their medical records for information on any implants that can be affected by the MRI. In certain procedures, MRI technicians may also inject patients with a paramagnetic substance.

Training

MRI techs can complete an associate's or bachelor's degree in radiology technology before going on to obtain the additional training needed to specialize in MRI technology. There are also training programs available that are approved by the American College of Radiology (ACR) that prepare MRI technicians to obtain their national certification from the American Registry of MRI Technologists (ARMRIT).

Ultrasound techs can obtain their training by completing an associate's or bachelor's degree program. A certificate training program is also available for experienced radiology technicians. National certifications are also available through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

Geography

Most states require MRI technicians to obtain a radiography license to practice. MRI techs must pass an exam administered by the ARRT or by the state and meet the education requirements to obtain their license.

Ultrasound techs are not currently required to obtain a license to practice; however, they can apply to become a registered sonographer with ARDMS.

Salaries

As the demand for ultrasound and MRI technicians rises, these technicians can expect to earn higher salaries. Factors like experience level, employer, location and national certification will also have an impact on their earning potential.

Ultrasound technicians make slightly more than MRI technicians. According to Salary.com, the average annual salary for an MRI technician is $62,040 compared to the $62,425 that ultrasound techs earn.
