Technical Trade & Vocational Colleges In Massachusetts

Technical, trade and vocational colleges offer career-focused education opportunities.


Colleges that offer specialized education and training for specific trades are referred to as technical, trade or vocational colleges. The term is used interchangeably. These types of colleges are available in Massachusetts whether the student seeks education in liberal arts, computer technology, medical professions or business.


Springfield Technical Community College


Springfield Technical Community College was founded in 1967 and is located on the Springfield Armory National Historic site. This school offers 86 programs for students to earn either a certificate of completion or an associate's degree in areas of study that include business and information technologies, science and engineering, humanities and social science, arts, health and engineering technologies. The average class size is 25 students per class with a faculty of 425 employees. More than half of the students are enrolled on a part-time schedule and the average age of the students is 24. The associate's degree option has choices that include biotechnology, dental hygiene and digital audio production while the certificate option has choices that include architectural technology, digital publishing and graphic arts technology.

Massachusetts College of Art and Design


The Massachusetts College of Art and Design was founded in 1873 and was open to anyone with a talent who was willing to succeed. This school was the first public and independent school of art and design as well as the first art school to provide a degree option. Students can pursue certificate, undergraduate and graduate-level studies. Some choices in the certificate option include furniture design, fashion design, industrial design and teacher preparation. For students who want to obtain an undergraduate degree, the options include community education, jewelry and metalsmithing, studio education, ceramics and architectural design. Graduate students can pursue subjects that include architecture, teaching and art education.

New England Institute of Art


The New England Institute of Art is a part of the Art Institutes and is located in Brookline, Massachusetts. This school was initially founded as the Norm Prescott School of Broadcasting in 1952 and offers two associate's degree programs and nine bachelor's degree programs. The associate's degree programs are in photography and audio production while the bachelor's degree programs include advertising; audio and media technology; digital film making and video production; graphic design; fashion and retail management; media arts and animation; interior design; photography; and web design and interactive media. Ten other programs are also available in the professional development category and do not earn credits toward a degree. Some of these choices include residential interior decorating, advanced website development and Pro Tools certification.
