An X-ray office clerk, also referred to as a radiology clerk, works in the radiology department of a hospital or for an outpatient radiology office. This occupation is responsible for administrative office tasks.


Education


Educational requirements include a high school diploma or GED.


Skills


Most employers require an X-ray office clerk to have some understanding of medical terminology and coding, as well as excellent customer service skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities.


Responsibilities


Administrative duties include answering office telephones, scheduling patients, maintaining radiology films and sending films or related medical information to other medical offices as requested.


Medical Coding and Billing


Along with administrative responsibilities, X-ray office clerks maintain medical records and insurance information using a database to ensure patients are billed correctly and payments are received for radiology services from health insurance providers.


Salary


The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a national average salary of $27,700 per year for general medical and surgical hospital office clerks as of May 2008.
