Keep A Nature Journal

Keeping a nature journal can be one of the most personally rewarding and satisfying experiences any nature lover could undertake. Documenting the splendor of nature in all its forms is a great way to preserve a snapshot of the natural world for those who come after you. It will also provide you with a lifetime of enjoyment as you go back and experience these wonders again and again.

Instructions

Keep a Nature Journal for Posterity

1. Learn from those who've gone before. Read 'Walden' by Henry David Thoreau, since this is the definitive text (see Resources below). While spending two years living in nature may not fit into your lifstyle, you can learn a lot about living in nature and recording your experiences by reading this classic text.

2. Follow Thoreau's advice and simplify, simplify, simplify.

3. Take a hike. Get out in nature and pay close attention to its bounty. Then, document those experiences. This is how you can create a living, breathing document that will be an example to others.

4. Don't delay. The rate of plant and animal extinctions is higher than it has ever been. Every day we lose unique flora and fauna that can never be replaced. See and document these natural wonders before they disappear forever.

5. Think about creating a nature journal for the digital age. You can do more than simply writing down your experiences and impressions. Interactive journals can utilize today's technology, including digital pictures, videos and music.

6. Encourage others to keep their own nature journals. Each and every person has a completely unique experience of and reaction to the world. Building a community of nature lovers like yourself will augment your own experiences and contribute to your enjoyment of the natural world.

7. Enjoy keeping your own nature journal and, if you find the experience rewarding, consider joining a nature conservancy group or starting a career as a conservationist.
