Qualify For Extra Help From Medicare Part D

Making prescriptions affordable for those on Medicare.

If you qualify for Extra Help through the Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage, also called Part D, the government will pay 85 to 100 percent of your prescription drug costs. To qualify, you must be a Medicare beneficiary, have limited income and resources, and reside in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia. You must be enrolled in a Medicare Prescription Drug plan to get this extra help. Many people don't realize that they qualify for this help, and that all they need to do is apply for it.

Instructions

1. Visit Social Security Online and read the Benefit Publications Section article "Tips for Completing the Application for Extra Help with Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Costs (Publication No 05-10122)."

2. Read SSA Publication No. 05-10128 to discover what you need to complete the application. Complete the worksheet within this publication to help you decide if you are eligible and to assist you in completing the actual application for extra help.

3. Complete an online application through the Social Security website, or through BenefitsCheckUp.org. If you prefer to apply by telephone, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).

4. Choose a Medicare prescription drug plan. If you need information about available plans or enroll in a plan, call 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY 1-877-486-2048) or visit Medicare.gov. If you do not select a plan, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will do it for you.
