Print A Barcode With Cobol

Print barcodes onto labels using the COBOL data.

COBOL, a programming language used mostly by businesses, includes data that explains barcodes. To properly print the COBOL barcode, you must download barcode printing software. Without this software, your computer lacks the ability to print the spaced lines associated with barcodes and instead prints a series of numbers that scanners cannot read. There are many barcode creation programs available online but most charge a small fee for download. As of February 2011, most programs cost between $30 and $50.

Instructions

1. Download barcode-making software from the internet (see Resources). Install the software by following the installation prompts. Open the software by double-clicking on the icon.

2. Click on the "Select Barcode" drop-down menu and select the type of barcode you wish to print.

3. Enter the name of your product into the "My Product" test field.

4. Open the COBOL file that contains the barcode. Locate the barcode within the COBOL file. Find the line of code that begins "Barcode" and ends with a number in quotations. This number, such as "789," is the barcode.

5. Highlight the barcode and copy it by pressing the "C" and "Control" keys simultaneously.

6. Enter the barcode into the "Barcode" text field of the barcode-making software. Click on the text code then press the keys "Control" and "V" simultaneously to paste the barcode.

7. Press the "Add to List" button then press the "Print Labels" button to send the barcode to your printer.
