Casual Argument Topics For A Research Paper

Argument research papers involve taking a stance on an issue and researching facts and statistics to back your position. They also require that you refute common arguments that the opposing side uses to defend their position. Writing about a research topic you feel strongly about makes it more interesting, and your writing will have more passion and substance.

School Uniforms

Write about school uniforms and whether they are effective in accomplishing their goal to reduce bullying and improve academic performance. Consider statistics on schools that use them versus schools that don't use school uniforms. Write about opinions of students, parents, teachers and school administrators on the issue.

Electronics

Do you feel that our society is too dependent upon electronics for everything? People use them for managing financial records and administrative records, submitting job applications and communicating via cell phones. Specify if people should use more applications or if they are unreliable and alternate ways should be used, such as traditional pen and paper.

Abstinence-Only Education

Many schools focus on abstinence-only education, teaching that the only option regarding sex is to wait for marriage. Administrators, students and some parents decide that teenage pregnancy rates would decrease if birth control, including hormonal birth control and condoms, was more accessible to students. Others argue that having contraception available sends the message that it is acceptable for students to have sex at a young age.

Public or Private Schools

Is there a difference between the education offered at public or private schools? Argue whether attending a private school give students an unfair advantage in the college admissions process. This topic also brings the issue up of economic equality since some parents can afford private schools, while others have problems affording a roof over their heads, making private school something that isn't even an option. Use these facts and statistics about the economic status of individuals and the funding available, whether it is out of pocket from parents or through financial aid.

Government Health Care

The issue of whether the government needs to provide universal health care, similar to the United Kingdom or Canada, is another frequent topic of argument. If you argue that a universal health care system needs to be implemented, explain how the government will fund it and if it is a fair system across the board for all citizens. If arguing against universal health care, provide alternative options for ensuring the citizens of the country remain healthy. Consider the costs of private health insurance.
