Hospital administrators manage either entire health facilities or particular departments. Their duties include coordinating, directing, planning and supervising the health care services of the hospital. Typically, a hospital administrator holds a master's degree in health services administration or a related field.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for hospital administrators in 2008 was $87,040. According to Payscale.com's 2010 statistics, the overall range of a hospital administrator's salary is between $57,844 and $109,958.


Considerations


To become a hospital administrator, all 50 states require, at minimum, a bachelor's degree, passing a licensing exam, going through a state-approved training program and continuing education credits. Many administrators advance to their position after working as a department head or assistant administrator.


Potential


Those wishing to work in hospital administration face good prospects as growth in this area is predicted to grow 16 percent between 2008 and 2018. However, competition for top positions at larger hospital facilities will be tough, as these are high-paying and prestigious jobs.
