Rotc Instructor Requirements

ROTC instructors help to recruit from colleges and universities across the country.

The United States Army COMTek division states that its mission is to "provide highly qualified and motivated contract employees who are focused on enhancing the United States Army Cadet Commands mission of recruiting, training, and commissioning the Army's future leaders." To accomplish this mission, they regularly place qualified individuals into over 277 colleges and universities across the country. Being an ROTC instructor requires travel and hard work, but opportunities include career growth, good compensation and a benefits package. Potential ROTC instructor candidates must meet several requirements to qualify for these positions.

Types of ROTC Instructor Positions Available

There are two types of ROTC instructor positions. The first is a Senior Military Science Instructor, or SMSI, and the second is a Military Science Instructor, or MSI. The different positions have different requirements; however, both positions require an Army background, the ability to travel and regular drug screenings.

Senior Military Science Instructor (SMSI)

To qualify as an ROTC SMSI instructor, you must be a retired Army Active Component or a retired or serving Reserve or National Guard Army Officer. This position also requires a bachelor's degree; however, those with a master's degree will be given preference. Applicants must have been active in the Army within the last five years, with either an honorable discharge or retirement. They must meet physical requirements as well. Candidates should meet the Army height and weight standards, own and be able to wear Army uniforms and pass the APFT at the time of hire.

Military Science Instructor (MSI)

The requirements for MSI differ from the requirements for SMSI. Candidates must be a retired or former Army Active Component, or be a retired or serving Reserve and National Guard Army NCO's with a classification of E-6 or above. The minimum educational requirement is an associate's degree, unless the candidate has on-campus ROTC experience. If the candidate has prior on-campus ROTC experience, then a minimum of 40 hours toward an associate's degree is required. Permanent support of a minimum of 12 years of military experience in the Army is required, or, if applying with Temporary support, a minimum of 10 years of military experience in the Army is required. All experience must be current, within five years of the time of application. Physical requirements include meeting the Army's height and weight standards, owning and being able to wear current Army uniforms and passing the standard APFT at time of hire.
