Scary Homemade Halloween Costumes For Adults

Creating a scary homemade Halloween costume can be rewarding and fun.

Some people look at a Halloween costume as an opportunity to pretend to be something larger than life. Others play it for the laugh. Still, perhaps the most common concept is the scary costume. While Halloween stores and other costume purveyors offer a wide range of choices, homemade might be the answer. Certainly, a costume is less scary if there are three of the same outfit at one party. Unique is better and can often be less expensive.

Serial Killer

Few things are as frightening as the cold, calculating and twisted serial killer. Create a costume for a gruesome serial killer with only a few purchases. In terms of clothing, nearly any kind of clothes will work. The props really sell the look. Get some fake body parts from a scientific supply company or Halloween store. Tuck things into pockets or hang parts on string or rope to wear. Add some fake blood and gore and carry a few prop weapons and handcuffs.

Zombie

Zombies may be slow-moving creatures, but they never give up and can be quite frightening. Start a zombie costume by deciding if your character became a zombie after being buried (in which case wear formal clothes in deteriorated condition) or after being killed before burial (in which case any type of clothing with tears and stains will work). Apply makeup on all exposed skin, and creating wounds is a nice touch.

Movie Monsters

Some movie monsters are difficult to reproduce with a homemade costume. Examples include the monsters from the "Alien" and "Predator" series of films. Some, though, like Frankenstein's monster and Dracula, are very doable. For Dracula, wear old-fashioned dress clothing and use pale makeup (get all exposed skin) and fangs. For Frankenstein, similar old clothing with clunky boots works. Use green makeup on all exposed skin. Create some scars with red makeup in lines to resemble a sewed-up incision.

Invisible

Sometimes the scariest thing is a threat that can be extremely close while remaining undetected. For use in dark areas, an invisible costume can create that look. Dress all in black. That includes some kind of black hood. Wear a skull mask or other mask underneath the hood and skeletal gloves under long sleeves for a spooky reveal.
