X-ray technicians earn varying hourly wages based on employer and location.


Also known as radiologic technicians or radiographers, X-ray technicians take diagnostic images using radiation. Due to the dangers of being exposed to radiation, X-ray technicians must obtain a certificate or diploma in radiography. The salary per hour of an X-ray technician will depend on factors such as his level of experience, the type of medical facility he works in and its location.


Hourly Salary


In the United States, X-ray technicians earn an hourly salary of $26.05 on average as of May 2009, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The median salary per hour is $25.59, with technicians in the bottom ten percent earning $17.16 and those in the top ten percent earning $36.27.


Medical Facilities


Most X-ray technicians work in general medical and surgical hospitals, where they earn a salary of $26.33 per hour on average. X-ray technicians may also work in the offices of physicians for an average of $24.45 per hour or in outpatient care centers at an average of $25.46 per hour. In medical and diagnostic laboratories, the average salary per hour for an X-ray technician is $27.53, and specialty hospitals offer an average of $28.04 per hour.


Other Facilities


The federal executive branch employs X-ray technicians at the average hourly salary of $26.99. Technicians working in office administrative services earn an average of $28.06 per hour, while those in employment services earn $28.66 per hour. X-ray technicians can also be found in management, scientific and technical consulting services earning an average of $29.79 per hour and in scientific research and development services at the average hourly rate of $31.16.


Location


Hourly wages for X-ray technicians vary from one state to the next. Those in Massachusetts earn the highest wages at an hourly salary of $32.95. Nevada is the second highest paying state for X-ray technicians at an average of $31.93 per hour, followed by Maryland at a rate of $31.64 per hour. Hawaii and Washington D.C. also rank as high paying with hourly rates of $30.51 and $30.42 for X-ray technicians.
