Radiology technicians

Radiology technicians are also known as radiographers and are responsible for using radiographic equipment, or X-ray machines, to produce images of a patient's body. Radiology technicians work closely with doctors, nurses and other health care professionals. Radiographers primarily work with X-ray machines and must take care to accurately and clearly image internal structures for diagnosis, treatment and analysis.
Education
The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that radiology technicians primarily receive associate's degrees to enter the profession. In addition to an associate's degrees, many radiographers receive certificates in radiography from community colleges or vocational schools. Although the degree level may vary, all radiographers must also receive a license to practice radiography in the state in which they reside or work.
Licensure
Licensure in radiology concerns radiation exposure and reducing the level of exposure that patients experience during an imaging session. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics article, "Radiologic Technologists and Technicians," federal laws regulate the amount of radiation that individuals can be exposed to, and to ensure this, specific training measures must be met.
Continuing Education and Professional Development
Though not required, radiographers can also receive additional qualifications and certifications. These certificates and qualifications provide radiographers with additional knowledge to stay current in the field. The article, "What Qualifications Do I Need for Radiography Technician Jobs?," on Degree Directory states that there are a number of national organizations that offer certifications for radiographers, such as the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board. Also, radiographers can join professional organizations such as the Society of Nuclear Medicine Technologist Section or the American Society of Radiologic Technologists to exchange ideas and experiences, in addition to sharing information about radiology.
