Consumer Information On Breast Enlargements

Breast implants are comtemplated by many women

Women often consider breast augmentation (breast enlargement) to improve their self-image, give them a younger appearance, or compensate for breast tissue lost due to pregnancy or weight loss. Several factors can help you determine if breast implants are right for you.

Commonly Performed

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation surgery (breast enlargement) was the most popular cosmetic procedure done in the United States in 2008 with more than 307,000 procedures performed.

Costs

In 2008 the average surgeon's fee for breast enlargement was $3,816. The total cost depends on the cost of the operation room, anesthesia, implants, medical test, post-surgery garments and prescriptions.

Safety

Breast augmentation is considered safe but occasionally complications can arise. They include scarring, bleeding, infection, blood clots, permanent or temporary changes in sensation, formation of firm scar tissue around the implant, or leakage of the implant.

Considerations

Even after breast enlargement, the appearance of the breast can change due to fluctuations in weight, pregnancy or menopause. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says breast implants do not last forever and may need to be replaced during a lifetime due to complications or unacceptable outcomes.

Male Breast Enlargement

Male breast enlargement, also know as pectoral implants, is increasing in popularity with over 1,330 men having the procedure in 2008. It is an option for a gentleman whose body does respond to exercise.
